A while back I created a tutorial on how to model a 3D couch and room using 3D Studio Max. It was a project I did for a class I had while I was still in college, and I came across it today, so I decided to post it. It is a rather basic box modeling tutorial, but it teaches some good concepts for anyone that may be new to 3Ds Max, or new to 3D modeling.

It takes a bit of time to do, only because of the complexity of 3D modeling, and 3Ds Max, but it is well worth trying out. I have done this again after I created it, and it seemed to be well documented, and easy to follow. So without further ado, lets get started on the 3D box model.

First under Standard Primitives located in the upper right hand corner
select Box and drag out a rectangular box anywhere.

Box

Enter in these Parameters so it looks like the picture above:

Length: 100.00
Width: 50.00
Height: 40.00
Length segments: 6
Width segments: 3
Height segments: 3

Press F12 and set the X Y and Z axis to 0.

In Perspective view turn on Edged Faces by right clicking
on the word Perspective in the corner of the viewpoint.

Box

Click the Modify Panel tab in the Control Panel,
it looks like:

Box

Right click on the box, and Convert To -> Convert to Editable Poly.

Box

In the Modify Panel, select Vertex under the Sub Objects of the Editable Poly,
and use the select tool to move the vertices so they look like this:

Box

Then select Polygon under the Sub Objects and select the top two polygons
that will be the seat of the couch and move them down so it looks like this:

Box

Then with those polygons still selected, click the icon next to Bevel, and bevel By Polygon with height of .4 and outline amount of -.8 and click OK, like this:

Box

And bevel them again, with a height of .5 and outline amount of -2.
Repeat this process,
With the 2 polygons of the back cushions, bevel them with
height of .4 and outline amount of -.9
And bevel them again with height of .3 and outline amount of -1.
With the 2 sides of the seat cushions, bevel with height of .4
and outline amount of -.5.
And bevel again with height of .3 and outline amount of -.8.
Press F9 to do a quick render,
by now you should have something like this:

Box

Now select Vertex under the Sub Objects, and in left view
select the top arm rest vertices and move them down so it looks like this:

Box

Switch back to Polygon in the Sub Objects, and select all of
the top polygons of the armrest and bevel them By Group with
height of .6 and outline amount of -.7 like this:

Box

And bevel them again with height of .2 and outline amount of -1.
Quick render using F9,
And it should look something like this:

Box

Making a Room around the couch:

Go to the Create Panel, (the tab to the left of the Modify Panel tab),
and select Plane.
Drag out a plane in the Top view, with Parameters:

length: 200.0
width: 200.0
length segments: 4
width segments: 4

Then Convert it to Editable Poly, and move the Vertices so they
look something like this:

Box

For this example, I’m just doing two walls of the room.
You can just do the same thing to make 4 walls if you want.
Still in Top view, switch to Polygon in the Sub Objects, and
select all the outer polygons like this:

Box

Click the icon next to Extrude and for the height use 25.0 like this:

Box

To make windows, deselect the polygons where you want the windowsto be,
and then Extrude the walls again with height of 65.0,like this:

Box

Extrude it again to make the space between the ceiling and the top of the windows
with a height of 12.0
Then select the polygons that will go over the window and extrude them
until the meet the other wall like this:

Box

You could apply some materials using the Material Editor if you are familiar with
materials. I’ll save that for another tutorial at a later date since it is a bit complex.
Here’s what I did with 2 mats, was rather simple, and takes little knowledge to do:

Box

Here is another view of it:

That’s it for this tutorial. I hope you learned something, whether you actually tried to follow it, or just read through it. It is one of my best done tutorials I think that I have made.

charchestI will be making a tutorial on character modeling sometime in the near future because I have recently learned how to do it, and if I do any 3D work in the future, it will be making characters. This is my first and only character model I made, though I am not finished with it, I did learn how to do it. I made many mistakes while making it, that I realized what I did wrong way too late to be able to correct them. So I am confident that the next character I model, I will be able to do it quicker, and correctly.
So that is all from me in this post.  Let me know what you think about the box model tutorial in the comments below.
