Maybe someday I will be able to do stuff like this, but until then I’ll just look on with awe.

This guy though didn’t have a friend to help him, not even the customers and employees of the store would bother to help him up, but I can understand why. The guy can’t stand on his own to save his life.

Well that saying also applies here, too, at least as far as me and my butt is concerned. That’s a one-way street, and ‘up’ or ‘in’ is the wrong way.

Animation combined with dance music always equals success, and a great music video that is worth watching. This video is one of those things you’d be stupid not to share with other people because it is just that awesome.  Ryan Duong, a member on the Tweeaks forum posted a thread with this and it made my day. I don’t know what goes through people’s minds who create things like this, or what kind of euphoria they may be experiencing at the time, because normal people don’t just come up with things quite like this.

The animation in this video is very well done, and that alone is enough to inspire me. Then there’s the idea of making a beat called Up Butt Coconut, and fully animating the whole track to illustrate the lyrics. The whole concept makes me want to go open up After Effects and create some crazy nonsensical animation about something that no one including myself would ever think of.

Okay, I’m off to not make anything really interesting, cool or retarded as this, but rather, sit and do nothing because I just some how found a way to write this much just for a video that I did not make but only wish that I had.

Do you feel the internet has lost all purpose it once had with videos like this?

I decided to post on a topic totally unrelated design, after last night when a friend and I went out to a dance club, where I was reminded of a once very popular dance. While we were dancing, I stopped for a moment to catch my breath, and I turned to watch my friend dance. Right then he did a move that, if I didn’t know any better, was straight from an old dance style of the 1920′s. He only did a couple quick steps, but that was enough to tell.  I went over to him and said, “did you just do the Charleston?”, hoping that he would say yes, as though he meant to do it. He just looked at me with confusion, and just laughed at me, then denying that he had. Given his response I figured he didn’t know what I meant exactly, or maybe he just thought I was crazy who knows. Which to some extent is true, but I know what I saw, and he did the Charleston dance, even if only for a second.

For those that don’t know much about the Charleston, it is a dance named for the city of Charleston, South Carolina. It’s rhythm became popular in the United States during 1923 throughout the mainstream dance scene, by a tune called The Charleston, written by James P. Johnson. It originated in a Broadway show called Runnin’ Wild.

The Charleston quickly became one of the most popular hits of the decade, and is still alive today, 86 years later. It’s not uncommon to see people doing steps that originated from the dance. I’ve seen people at clubs doing moves that stem from the Charleston dance rather often. I even witnessed my friend unconsciously or not, do a couple quick steps that were straight from the dance. And I know even I have a very similar style of dancing, that incorporates the same old school dance steps, just with a more modern day movement.

I’ve always wanted to learn the dance, since I already do certain moves stemming from the Charleston, and I’ve always thought it looked like a cool and fun type of dance. The steps aren’t difficult, but getting the coordination to alter the way I move is not easy for me. I always thought there was more to doing this dance, but it’s only 4 basic steps. See below.

The only thing I ever really knew about the Charleston dance was that there is a scene in the popular Christmas movie It’s a Wonderful Life, during the school dance in the gymnasium, where everyone is doing the Charleston, and then proceed to all fall and jump into the pool as the gym floor opens up. Everyone has seen that movie at least once in their life. I have seen it too many times to count thanks to my mother who LOVES it.

Okay enough about Jimmy Stewart and his stupid wonderful life.  In bringing the classic old school dance steps, together with the present day sounds electronic music, I found the perfect video on Youtube that bridges the gap between time periods. It combines the 1920′s steps of the Charleston dance, with the modern beats of Daft Punk.

Notice how well the beat of the music goes with the dance. It truly was a dance style that was before it’s time. It was meant to be danced to techno music I’m telling you. I’m going to bring this back to the dance scene of today. It will become one of the biggest hits of this decade! Haha, I’m not crazy, I swear…

So How Do You Do The Charleston Dance?

In case anyone is interested in learning how to do the Charleston, which is probably nobody but me, here are the basic concepts.

Music for the Charleston is a ragtime jazz played in 4/4 time. The dance is made up of a series of up and down movements executed by bending and straightening the knees, while kicking your heels forward and backwards.

• Step forward with the right foot and touch your left toe forward.
• Step backwards with the left foot and touch you right toe back.
• Incorporate your own variations to add more personality and feeling to the dance.

Some food for thought I just came up with…

While history may repeat itself,
When it will you cannot tell.
Though nothing dies or goes away,
It just goes out of style and fades.
Until one day, someone realizes,
It was cool and then revives it.
